THE ETERNAL SON OF GOD
Sermon by Wm. Henry Cash, Jr. 1927 -2012
TITLE: THE ETERNAL SON OF GOD
TEXT : JOHN 1: 1 - 5
1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2. The same was in the beginning with God. 3. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. 4. In him was life and the life was the light of men. 5. And the light shineth in the darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not.
INTRODUCTION : The book of Matthew emphasizes Jesus' messiahship, while the book of Mark emphasizes Jesus as the wonderful Son-Servant, the book of Luke gives us Jesus as the Son of Man. In the book of John, Jesus is presented as the Son of God. John focuses on Jesus' deity by proving His pre-incarnation state-being God from all eternity, who left His home in glory to become man, and dwell among us, and became our subsitute in order to satisfy the justice of an holy and righteous God. His deity is proven all the way through this Gospel. God in His wisdom, Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, thus making Him equal with God.
PROPOSITION: Christ came into the world to make an incomprehensible God understandable.
CHRIST DID THIS BY SHOWING US HIMSELF
IN HIS PRE-INCARNATION
IN THIS THREE-FOLD RELATIONSHIP:
I. IN THE RELATION OF THE WORD TO GOD (HIS BEING). John chapter 1.1,2
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.
Genesis 1.26,27 "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness....So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."
2. The experience of Abraham.
Genesis 12.1 "Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee."
3. The experience of Moses.
Exodus 2.2 "Now the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. ...v.6 "moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God." v. 10. "Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharoah, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt."
4. The experience of Daniel and Shadrach,
Meshech and Abednego.
Daniel Chapter 3 The Fiery Furnace -
v. 24. "Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, 'Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? The answered and said unto the king, 'True, O King.'
25. He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God."
Cast into the fire, they were walking with the Son of God, and when they were come forth, they were not singed, not burned, and not a hair of their head had been singed.
Acts 17. 22-23
v.22 'Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too supersticious v. 23. for as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar "TO THE UNKNOWN GOD" Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him I declare unto you."
2. Jesus came into the world to reveal the true God.
John 14.7 - 11
John 14.7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him and have seen him. v. 8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. v. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father, and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? v. 10. Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself, but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. v.11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works sake."
I John 5.20
And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and that we are in him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

I. IN THE RELATION OF THE WORD TO GOD (HIS BEING). John chapter 1.1,2
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.
A. The Old Testament idea and relationship of God.
1. The experience of Adam.Genesis 1.26,27 "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness....So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."

B. IT IS SHOWN IN MAN'S EAGERNESS TO KNOW GOD.
1. The search in every nation and people group on the earth for God is seen in the false religions they follow.Acts 17. 22-23
v.22 'Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too supersticious v. 23. for as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar "TO THE UNKNOWN GOD" Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him I declare unto you."

I John 5.20
And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and that we are in him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
C. IT IS SEEN IN CHRIST HIMSELF THAT ALL THE TREASURES OF THE DIVINE WISDOM AND COLLECTIVE THOUGHT OF GOD IS EMBODIED.
Colossians 2.1 - 3
1. For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; 2. that their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God and of the Father, and of Christ; 3. in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
D. IT IS SEEN IN THE RELATION OF THE WORD TO MANKIND - TO ALL MEN.
A. His Creative work with God
Genesis 1.1 In the beginning God created
the heaven and the earth.
Genesis 1. 26 - 27
"And God said, Let us make man in our
image, after our likeness....So God created
man in his own image, in the image of God
created he him; male and female created he
them."
B. In Him were hid all the mysteries of God.
Ephesians 3.8,9
8.Unto me, who am less than the least of
all saints, is this grace given, that I
should preach among the Gentiles the
unsearchable riches of Christ, v.9 and
to make all men see what is the fellowship
of the mystery , which from the beginning
of the world hath been hid in God, who
created all things by Jesus Christ.
C. He came into the world to reveal this mystery to us.
John 6.51
I am the living bread which came down from
heaven.
John 14.6,7
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the
truth and the life, no man cometh unto
the Father, but by me. If ye had known me,
ye should have known my Father also; and
from henceforth ye know him and have
seen him.
John chapt 3. 13 - 16
And no man ascended up to heaven,
but he that came down from heaven,
even the Son of man which is in heaven.
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in
the wilderness, even so must the Son of
man be lifted up. That whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but
have eternal life. FOR GOD SO LOVED
THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS
ONLY BEGOTTEN SON THAT
WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM
SHOULD NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE
EVERLASTING LIFE.
D. Every one of must realize our helpless condition
as sinners, repent of our sins, and receive Christ
as our Lord and Savior just by simple faith.
John 1.12
To conclude, Sinners. You as a sinner,
cannot know the true God until you born
by the Spirit - You were born physically,
now you must be born again.
cannot know the true God until you born
by the Spirit - You were born physically,
now you must be born again.
John 3.3.
Verily, Verily I say unto you,
ye must be born again.
ye must be born again.
To conclude, Christians, we should follow
His example by bearing one another's burdens,
and fulfill the law of Christ to love one another
as He has loved us.
His example by bearing one another's burdens,
and fulfill the law of Christ to love one another
as He has loved us.
Galatians 6.2
Bear ye one another's burdens
and so fulfill the law of Christ.
and so fulfill the law of Christ.
John 13.33,34
A new commandment I give unto you,
That ye love one another, as I have loved you. By this shall all men know that ye are my
disciples, if ye have love one to another.
That ye love one another, as I have loved you. By this shall all men know that ye are my
disciples, if ye have love one to another.
AS WE APPROACH CHRISTMAS
AND THANKSGIVING
LET US WORSHIP GOD
WHO IS ETERNAL
AND WHO IS KNOWN TO US
BY HIS SON'S COMING
WHO IS ETERNAL
AND WHO IS KNOWN TO US
BY HIS SON'S COMING
