Wm. Henry Cash, Jr. (1927 – 2012)

TITLE:    REPENTANCE
Hymns
WHAT CAN WASH AWAY MY SIN ?
AT CALVARY
JUST AS I AM

TEXT:

INTRODUCTION:  The Gospel of the Lord
Jesus Christ is very simple.   Salvation
is by simple faith alone.    Satan will do
all in his power to bring confusion
concerning God’s simple plan of Salvation.
  Satan confuses people by additions
and subtractions to the Word of God.
Salvation is by faith alone.

Acts 16.31. And they said, Believe on the
 Lord Jesus Christ,
and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Acts 4.12.  Neither is there salvation in any other:
for there is none other name under heaven
given among men whereby we must be saved.
People are confused by trying to add SOME THING to salvation besides faith.   Such things as good works, baptism, church membership, and such like.   Today we shall consider the doctrine of repentance and the part it

WHAT IS TRUE FAITH?
True faith involves repentance –
a change and a turning around to God for salvation.

Let us consider the doctrine of repentance.

I.              WHAT IS REPENTANCE.
A.   It means “a change of mind or turning about”

Matthew 21. 28 – 30
28. But what think ye?  A certain man had two sons;
and he came to the first and said, Son, go work to day
 in my vineyard.
29. He answered and said, I will not,
but afterwards he repented, and went.
30And he came
to the second, and said likewise.  And he answered and
said I go, and went not.

B.   The object that produces repentance

II Timothy 2.24-25
24.  And the servant of the Lord must not strive;
but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach.

25. In meekness, instructing those that oppose
themselves: if God peradventure will give them
repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.

C.   The relationship between sorrow
and repentance we ought to look at:

II Corinthians 7.10
For godly sorrow worketh
repentance:
to salvation not to be repented of:
 but the sorrow of
the world worketh death.

D.   Sorrow works repentance –

Sorrow -
brings repentance -
 repentance brings salvation.

E.   Repentance is often used
as a synonym of faith.

Luke 24.45 – 48
45. Then opened he
 their understanding,
 that they might understand the scriptures;

46. And said unto them,
 Thus it is written,
and thus it behooved Christ to suffer,
and to rise from the dead
the third day;

47. And that repentance
and
remission of sins
 should be preached
 in his name
 among all nations,
 beginning at Jerusalem.

48. And ye are witness
 of these things.

Acts 11.18  When they heard these things,
 they held their peace,
and glorified God, saying,
Then hath God also to the Gentiles
granted repentance unto life.

Acts 20.21  Testifying both to the Jews,
and also to the Greeks,
 repentance toward God,
and faith
 toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 26.19 – 20

19.  Whereupon, O King Agrippa,
I was not disobedient
 unto the heavenly vision:

20. But shewed first unto them
of Damascus, and at Jerusalem,
and throughout all the coasts of Judea,
 and then to the Gentiles;
that they should repent
 and turn to God,
and do works meet for repentance.

Romans 2.4
Or despises thou the riches
of his goodness
 and forbearance
and longsuffering;
 not knowing that
the goodness of God
leadeth thee to repentance.

II Peter 3.9
The Lord is not slack
 concerning his promise,
as some men count slackness;
but is longsuffering to us-ward,
 not willing
 that any should perish,
but that all should come to repentance.

II.           REPENTANCE IN RELATIONSHIP
TO THE NATION OF ISRAEL

A.   John the Baptist and Jesus preached repentance.

Matthew 3.2   John.
 And saying,  Repent ye:
for the kingdom
 of heaven
is at hand.
Matthew 4.17  Jesus.
   From that time
 Jesus began to preach,
and to say, Repent:
for the kingdom
of heaven
 is at hand.

B.   Israel was influenced
by Pharisaism which taught
 that Israel was righteous
because
 they were the
 children
 of Abraham.

C.   It was a system
 of works
 with 365 negative
 commandments
and 250
 positive
commandments.

Matthew 5.20
 I say unto you,
 That except your righteousness
 shall exceed
 the righteousness
 of the scribes
and Pharise

es, ye shall in no case
 enter into
the
 kingdom of heaven.

D.   They were trusting in the Law
 of Moses for salvation.

E.  They were urged
to repent or change from
this system
 to faith in Christ.

F.   Judgment came
upon the nation
 of Israel
because they
 did not repent.

(There is going to always
be a remnant who believe;
and one Day, God
will restore
the Davidic
Kingdom in
the 1000 year
Rule of Messiah -
which is a
subject
for
another post)

Matthew 21.42 – 44
42. Jesus saith unto them,
 Did ye never read
 in the scriptures,
The stone
which the builders rejected,
the same is made
the head of the corner?

43.  Therefore I say unto you,
the kingdom of God
 shall be taken from you,
 and given to a nation
 bringing
 forth the fruits thereof.

44. And whosoever shall fall
on this stone shall be broken:
 but on whosoever
it shall fall,
it will grind him to powder.

Matthew 23.37 – 39
37.  O Jerusalem ! Jerusalem!
Thou that killest the prophets
 and stonest them which
are sent unto thee, how often
 would I have gathered
 thy children together,
even as a hen gathereth her chickens
 under her wings;
and ye would not.

38. Behold,
your house
 is left unto you desolate.

39.  For I say unto you,
ye shall not see me henceforth,
 till ye shall say,
Blessed is he that cometh
in the name of the Lord.

III.         REPENTANCE IN THE LIFE AND EXPERIENCE OF A CHRISTIAN.

A.   People are exhorted to repent
and be converted.

Acts 2.36 – 38
2.36  Therefore
et all the house of Israel
know assuredly,
that God has made
 that same Jesus,
whom ye crucified,
both Lord and Christ.

2.37 Now when they heard this,
they were pricked in their heart,
 and said unto Peter
and to the rest of the apostles,
 Men and brethren,
what shall we do?

2.38  Then Peter said unto them,
 Repent,
and be baptized every one of you
in the name of Jesus Christ
 for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive
he gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 3.19,20

3.19     Repent ye therefore,
and be converted
that your sins may be blotted out,
 when the times of refreshing
shall come the presence of the Lord.

3.20     And he shall send
Jesus Christ,
which before was preached unto you.

B.   A Person is to confess
and accept God’s evaluation of sin.

Romans 3.23

All have sinned
and come short of the glory of God.

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death,
 but the gift of God
 is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 10.9,10

9. That if thou shalt
confess with thy mouth
the Lord Jesus, and shall believe
in thine heart
 that God has raised him
from the dead;
thou shalt be saved.

10. For with the heart
man believeth
 unto righteousness,
and with the mouth
 confession
 is made unto salvation.

C.   The relationship
of Godly sorrow and repentance
 is here clearly seen.

II Corinthians 7.8 -10

7.8  For though I made you sorry
 with a letter,
 I do not repent:
for I perceive that the same epistle
hath made you sorry,
though it were but for a season.

7.9  Now I rejoice,
not that ye were made sorry,
 but that ye sorrowed
to repentance,
for ye were made sorry
after a godly manner
that ye might receive
damage by us in nothing.

7.10  For godly sorrow
worketh repentance
to salvation not to be repented of;
 but the sorrow
 of the world
worketh death.

IV.         RELATIONSHIP OF REPENTANCE TO SALVATION.
A.    There are 150 passages that tell us salvation is by faith alone.

             Romans 4.4
  But to him that worketh
is the reward
not reckoned of grace,
but of debt.

           Romans 4.5
But to him that worketh not,
but believeth on him that
 justifieth
the ungodly,
 his faith
 is counted
for righteousness.

B.   It is wrong to believe
that we have to shed tears
to soften the heart of God.

C.   Repentance
is included in believing,
it is not a separate act.

D.   It is a change of mind and attitude.

I Thessalonians 1.9 – 10

9. For they themselves
 shew of us what manner
of entering in we had unto you,
and how ye turned to God
 from idols
to serve the living and true God.

10.  And to wait for His Son from heaven,
whom he raised from the dead,
even Jesus,
which delivered us
from the wrath to come.

E.   Salvation depends
upon believing
which includes repentance.

F.   Salvation is preceded by repentance.

CONCLUSION:
Have you had a personal experience
 with the Lord Jesus Christ?
It is by simply accepting
 God at His Word
which includes repentance
 with a Godly sorrow
for sin
and turning
to serve
the true and living God.
